What to check before investing in an autumn layer

A good coat has to work over the clothes beneath it. The fitting-room test should reflect that.

Try it over the right layer

Use the knitwear or tailoring you expect to wear beneath the coat, then sit, reach forward and lift your arms. Note where the shoulder seam sits and whether the fastening pulls. Compare sleeve and back length with a coat you already wear, rather than relying only on the model’s height.

Read beyond the fabric headline

An impressive fiber name on the outside does not explain the whole garment. Check the full composition, lining, care label, fastening and pocket construction. Close-up images can help with the weave and finish, but they cannot confirm how a fabric feels or drapes. Use a return policy that lets you assess the garment indoors.

Put the aftercare in the budget

Think about storage, cleaning and alterations before you buy. Check the label before steaming, washing or using a stain treatment. If a sleeve adjustment or specialist clean is needed, add that cost to the comparison. Choose a piece because it fills a gap in your wardrobe, not because a sale label makes it seem urgent.
